Chapter Sixteen

Cartazonon guided the ambassador’s wife around the parquet ballroom floor. "I am so glad we were able to save the nature preserve today. Siberian tigers are too majestic to not protect."

She smiled, the wrinkles in her dark skin framing her mouth. "They are stunning creatures, but I must admit I'm surprised that a businessman such as yourself cares so much."

He chuckled. "I am sure my shareholders will chastise me, but how can I make money knowing what I'm doing is killing such amazing creatures?"

"I am glad you feel that way. I should introduce you to the ambassador of Kenya, he could also use a strong ally." Her white curls bounced around her face as they spun in time to the music.

"I am honored that you have such regard for me, and I would love to help. What good is wealth when the planet you live on is dying? We must all fight to protect and preserve our home."

"Well said, Mr. Cartazonon, well said indeed."

After hours of dancing even handmade Italian shoes hurt your feet. Cartazonon climbed the stairs to his room and began to remove his tuxedo. He'd had to play the charming environmental humanitarian all night, but it was worth it. He now had full access to several large preserves where he suspected magical creatures were hiding, and he had some great tax write-offs.

Turning on his Jacuzzi, he slid into the hot bubbling water. He preferred natural hot springs, but one shouldn't be too picky. Looking out the window he watched the snow fall down onto St. Petersburg. A cool breeze caught his attention.

—Yes? he asked, mentally connecting with the walk-in.

—We have checked through Argentina and haven't found anything. Should we move up into Peru? You have several people there who owe you favors.

—Yes, all right go to Peru, but if you don't find them in a day, then leave. I won't use all my resources there for this one thing."

—Yes, Cartazonon, we'll be careful.

—And use low-level people. No one with any real power, there is more to my empire than feeding off magical creatures, he reminded the walk-in.

—Of course, sir.

The walk-in broke the connection and Cartazonon relaxed into the water. No, he wouldn't risk everything for a bunch of fire chickens playing games they didn't understand. He would act with patience and care. They would mess up eventually. And then he would find out about the unicorn.
